Silo Shellz x Y-DUB – The Struggle

I’ve been receiving a decent amount of new followers on my Twitter since starting it last year. When I notice an artist following me I always try my best to check out at least a few songs to see if I’m feeling it. Got followed by Silo Shellz earlier and checked out the Soundcloud, was impressed with what I was hearing.

Above is a mixtape from Silo Shellz released earlier this month that features production from Y-DUB (according to Souncloud he’s only 18. Great beats from a young producer!). Really digging the more jazzy production from Y-DUB and Silo’s nice on the mic too. Not sure what it is about Detroit that produces so many good rappers but I’d definitely include Sillo Shellz as just another representative of this fact.

It is also interesting to me to see that Y-DUB is over in Europe. There have been a few relatively recent projects that I can think of where European producers work with Detroit emcees (See Paul White’s Rapping with Paul White or JR & PH7’s The Standard). No idea why the combination seems to work so well, but I’m a big fan! Definitely looking forward to hearing more from both Silo Shellz and Y-DUB.

You can download The Struggle for free over on Bandcamp.

Earl Sweatshirt – Hive

Never could have imagined saying this a year or two ago, but I have to admit that I’m really digging the music that’s been released this year from the OFWGKTA crew. Tyler’s Wolf has been a very surprising favorite of mine this year and the latest tracks from Earl and Hodgy have also been fantastic. From listening to these more recent releases it’s starting to feel like the group is developing a more mature sound which I suppose is only natural given how young these guys were when they started receiving more mainstream attention. It would be nice if the group’s more vocal fanbase could also mature, a lot of these kids are almost as bad as Bieber folks (Tyler even recognizes this on Wolf).

Above is the new track from Earl which will be appearing on his first solo album Doris that releases August 20th. If the album is as consistently good as Hive, Whoa, and Chum (these tracks will all appear on the album) I think this will be one of the year’s better releases. Earl has always been the strongest rapper in the collective in my opinion and with these tracks that have been released so far I think it’s relatively safe to say that Doris will meet the hype.

Definitely be sure to check out the videos for Woah and Chum if you haven’t already, all three of these music videos are great.

Rah Band – Messages From The Stars

Someone over on STMB was asking about the ID for this one, very happy folks came through with it! Really really great jam. J Rocc played this during a live set recently and it looks like Tyler also tweeted it out (wonder if he heard J Rocc play it?). Thought the most upvoted comment on Youtube for the song was pretty accurate description; It’s like music to Sonic the Hedgehog with lyrics. Will hopefully own this one on wax someday, checking out some of their other music and it’s really nice.

The Underachievers – The Proclamation

New song and video from The Underachievers. If you haven’t heard of the UA I’d definitely recommend listening to their mixtape Indigoism that was dropped through Flylo’s Brainfeeder label earlier this year. These guys are easily my favorite representatives of the Beast Coast movement. The music on Indigoism is quite refreshing to listen to as it feels so fresh, really hope that these dudes receive all the exposure and success they deserve. The tape is incredibly consistent and I can almost guarantee it will be in my top 3 for album/release of the year.

The new track above is great. I’m not a big fan of the Rolling Stones, but the flip of Gimme Shelter is fantastic. The rap is still very consistent as well, have yet to hear a song by the two where I’m not feeling what they’re saying. Hopefully this is a sign of what will be coming in the new album that will likely release by the end of the year. Definitely looking forward to it!

Pixies – Bagboy (Music Video)

NEW PIXIES!!!! We have been waiting for many years and it is finally here! Very very very happy to hear some new music from the Pixies (Can you tell?). Not only do we get a new song but also an interesting music video to go along with it. Hopefully this means we will get a new album here soon as well.

It’s crazy to think about how it has almost been a decade since the last time there’s been new music from the band. I still remember hearing Bam Thwok premiered on 107.7 The End as a kid (Back when the station didn’t suck ass like it does now). I personally think this new track Bagboy sounds a lot more like the Pixies releases from the 90s (a good thing!), after listening to it a few times now I have to say I’m really digging it. Very excited just thinking about the new future of the band. Easily the best news I’ve been able to share here on this site so far.

You can check out the band’s new website for a download of the track.

Clams Casino ft. DOOM – Bookfiend (Unofficial Video)

This is an unofficial video for Clams Casino’s Bookfiend I made earlier today after checking out Bookhead. I personally thought the production on this track was better than JJ’s and the slowed down DOOM is nice too. I made the switch to black and white for the visuals as well since it looks a lot more interesting in my opinion (the colors from original video didn’t seem all that important). I’m pretty happy with how it turned out, the timing of the song actually matched up relatively well with the video. Would have been cool if this was the song for the official video they put out today.

JJ DOOM – Bookhead

New video from JJ DOOM. Really diggin the mirror mask and video overall (though not as much as Guv’nor!). Someone mentioned that the mask was probably inspired by Space is the Place which you can see in the video below. There’s also a video below talking about the making of this music video that was put out a few days ago. The track will be appearing on a re-release of Keys to the Kuffs which will likely be coming out here pretty soon.

Unlocking the Truth

[vimeo 68177758 w=620 h=349]

Great mini documentary featuring two very talented little dudes. Malcolm Brickhouse and Jarad Dawkins are part of the heavy metal band Unlocking the Truth. It is amazing how well these guys play given how young they are. If you were to close your eyes and listen to the music I’m sure everyone would imagine them being much older and looking a lot different. It’s too bad to hear that they get crap about their look and the music they play, but it sounds like they know to look past this nonsense and are on their way to be very successful when they’re older. I’m sure we’ll all be hearing more about these guys in the future.

To learn more about the band check out their website over here. You can also check out more features of interesting people over at The Avant/Garde Diaries.

Quasimoto Slow-Mo: Madlib as Lord Quas

To celebrate the release of the new Quasimoto compilation Yessir Whatever I thought it would be cool to share a video I made many years back. In the video above I made a compilation of Quasimoto tracks with sections that are put in slow motion. Using this method, you can hear Madlib rapping as Lord Quas. Madlib achieves the Quasimoto effect by rapping over a slowed version of a beat he’s using and then speeds it up.

It’s interesting to hear what it would have sounded like when he was recording the song, there does seem to be a difference between how he raps as himself and as Quas (the voice he uses in the record store skit is also funny!). Definitely grab yourself a copy of Yessir Whatever, it’s a great comp.
