Jonwayne – Reflection (Rap Album One)

First track from Jonwayne’s Rap Album One which drops late next month. Jonwayne has previously released a series of fantastic cassettes since last year which I also highly recommend checking out. All of these projects have truly demonstrated the talent that Jonwayne has on the mic and on the production side of things, really happy that Stones Throw has given him the opportunity to put so much stuff out. The label has been going through some changes over the last few years and I think Jonwayne has become my favorite representative of this “new era”.

Very excited about the release of the full length Rap Album One which drops October 29th. The previews that are available on the store page are sounding great. One beat I can’t wait to hear him rap on is for “Black Magic” which is one of two songs produced by Scoop Deville. I made a little loop of the sample beat which will have to hold me over until next month. This is definitely going to be a day one purchase for me.

Breis – Only Human (Kensaye Remix)

New music sent over by Kensaye, another fantastic remix of a great song! Haven’t heard Breis before but I’m really digging his raps. The Kensaye production is also smooth as always. Kensaye interviewed Breis on his radio show a few months back as well, definitely worth checking out.

One thing that stood out in the interview to me was Breis mentioning his education work through the Student of Life program. Always cool to see folks supporting their community, especially awesome how Breis integrates the art of hip hop into educating youth. Will be keeping an eye out on more music from Breis and Kensaye, both are very talented and showing what good can come from hip hop.

Be sure to follow @MrBreis, @Solworkshops, and @Kensaye1!

Pixies – EP1 (2013) Full Stream

Very excited (again!) to share some more new Pixies music! The band’s first EP since getting back together dropped last night and it was clearly an instant purchase for me. There is a limited edition 10″ vinyl for the release which is shipping right away over here, really looking forward to this showing up in the mail. Cannot wait for the full album, hopefully we might get it before the end of the year.

A video for Indie Cindy was also made available today which can be seen below!

Ryan Hemsworth – Danny Brown x Arnold

Sweet mashup of Danny Brown’s Blueberry and Arnold’s Plus and Minus by Ryan Hemsworth. This was part of Ryan Hemsworth’s live set during last month’s Pitchfork Music Festival. Hard to top Darq E Freaker’s original production, but Danny Brown’s rap flows pretty good with the more laid back Arnold tune.

Captain Murphy – Between Villains

[soundcloud url=”http://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/105561440″ params=”color=848484&auto_play=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=’166′ iframe=”true” /]

Fantastic new track from Captain Murphy featuring Viktor Vaughn, Earl Sweartshirt, and Thundercat through Adult Swim’s 2013 Singles. Duality was one of my favorite releases from last year and it makes me happy to see that Flying Lotus is devoting a good amount of effort towards this project (see his other feature on Jonwayne’s latest Cassette release).

Really really looking forward to the full album V which will hopefully be coming later this year. Curious as to whether Between Villains will make it on the album, I definitely think it is record material. Turn up the bass to get the full effect from this one!

Aqua TV Show Show Theme

Checking out the new theme for Aqua Teen Hunger Force’s 10th season that features Flying Lotus and Thundercat. Sweet tune, really laid back (especially diggin the Captain Murphy laugh at the end). While it’s a nice intro, there’s no way Flying Lotus/Thundercat or anyone else could make a track that tops the original theme with Schoolly D:

2v Sides of the Same: Spittin’ Images

[bandcamp width=100% height=120 album=854787577 size=large bgcol=ffffff linkcol=333333 tracklist=false artwork=small]

Happy to share even more new material here from my friend Avant-Garde. His second full length project of the year 2v Sides of the Same: Spittin’ Images was dropped late last month and again I have to say I’m a big fan of the music he’s been putting out.

He’s had a very productive year given the two tapes dropped in addition to other tracks he’s been featured on and released this year. Some dudes in the game can get caught up in the quantity over quality mindset and I think it’s very important to note that this does not apply to Avant-Garde. While he’s releasing new music at a relatively quick pace, it becomes very clear by listening to his work that there’s still a lot of thought and quality going into the craft of his music. The consistent output of tracks instead becomes a method of continually delivering fresh material to the people who should definitely be giving him the attention he deserves.

Every new release from Avant-Garde has become my favorite of his and this continues to be true for 2v Sides of the Same: Spittin’ Images. He’s always been great on the mic and continues to develop this skill, but I feel like the greater development of his music has been most noticeable on the mixing and production end in every subsequent project. When I first started listening to his music the mixing could be a little rough around the edges at times and the production often consisted of beats from other tracks. This new release and his last project Pigeon show that he’s becoming more experienced behind the boards and the addition of fresh production is definitely nice to see as well (checkout that production on Suit Jacket, great stuff). Definitely recommend keeping Avant-Garde on your radar, he’s going to be someone you hear about pretty often in the future I think.

Download 2v Sides of the Same: Spittin’ Images & Pigeon, these projects absolutely deserve a listen. Follow @Avant_GardeMC to keep up with future releases.

Quasimoto – Catchin’ The Vibe

New Quasimoto video for Catchin’ The Vibe which was included in the recently released compilation Yessir Whatever. I forgot how clean the remastering of some of these tracks are for the compilation, I remember this song sounding a lot more grimey originally. Think I might actually prefer the old master since it kinda fit in with what I feel like is more of the Quasimoto aesthetic. The video is quite interesting and well made, this comes from the guys who won Stones Throw’s music video contest a few years ago with Last Donut of the Night. Check that one out below:

Kashmere Stage Band – Super Strut

TRACK

This track had been stuck in my head a few weeks ago, I’m happy to have finally identified it. Have heard this a few times during live James Pants sets I’ve posted about here and here but couldn’t figure out what it was. I keep forgetting that awesome apps like Shazam exist which lead to my discovery in seconds.

Great song from the Kashmere Stage Band, looks like their material has seen reissues from Egon’s Now-Again label which might explain how JP came across the track. There was a 12″ released for the song which I picked up immediately after finding out about all of this. The story behind the band sounds quite interesting and there was actually a documentary released a few years ago that discusses their history. Very interested in seeing this after checking out the trailer which I’ve included below:

RIP George Duke

Very sad to hear about George Duke’s passing. Above is the song that introduced me to his music (along with Cobham’s as well) which was featured in Madlib’s incredible Chocolate City mix from 2001. When I was a Spotify user last year I had listened to a great amount of Duke’s material while at work and really enjoyed it. Very talented musician that has actually been incredibly active after all of these years. It was especially sad to see his website where it shows he had just released an album last month and was still touring around the country.

I highly recommend checking out any of the albums in his impressively extensive discography. Lots of great music recorded over the many decades of his career.
