James Pants – New Interview & Mix

[vimeo 41894320 w=580 h=326]

Fantastic new video with James Pants brought to you by One O’Clock. Includes some live footage of a recent performance in Paris and a little insight into JP from a few of the questions he gets from them in the interview. The fear of hell bit was particularly interesting, especially in respect to Seven Seals. That album had a pretty dark sound to it (my interpretation anyway) and I have always wondered what was going on in his head with songs like I Promised I Lied especially (the transition that takes place in that song is still amazing to me). Wish they could have gone into more detail on this part, but I imagine he could go on for a bit talking about stuff like that I suppose. On the music side check that song at 2:35, what a jam. There’s also a cleaner version of his live drum bit that I had originally seen with his performance at the Boiler Room at 9:50.

Stones Throw also put up ST Podcast 74 by JP the other night but quickly removed it for some reason (some on STMB are saying that it might be due to some crappy copyright issue). Fortunately I was able to get a download of it before this happened and I must say that it is fantastic (just as his other two ST Podcasts are!). It sucks because there was a neat story behind this podcast but it was also removed with the podcast post. From what I remember, James Pants recently donated his huge boom box collection to some museum in Germany (where he is currently living I believe) and the podcast was a performance he gave at an event there for the opening of the exhibit. This is what I believe I read anyway, I’m hoping that more information about this will be posted somewhere if the podcast isn’t returned. Above is a clip from the podcast, probably my favorite part of the mix. I’m not sure what the original song is, but the remix is so smooth!

Anyway, I can’t wait for more James Pants this year. His first release of the year was excellent, really looking forward to hearing even more new material.

UPDATE (6/28/12): Mix is back up over here.

Dawn of the Dead Credits

Finished watching this movie with some friends at Plug.dj earlier. Such an amazing way to end the film (which is a great flick if you haven’t seen it by the way!). In another part of the movie I immediately recognized the sample to the intro of Gorillaz – Demon Days. Guess I hadn’t seen the movie for awhile, don’t remember recognizing that bit last time. Lots of neat music in the soundtrack though which seemed to be the case with a lot of films made around this time.

College Collection Photos

Thought I would post some older photos of my collection here today. These are from my time in college which is where my collection really started to grow (before college I only had about a dozen records or so). As you can see from the pictures, I went a little crazy buying stuff between school quarters. This isn’t everything I bought then either, I filled up a couple crates by the time I left Seattle last year. Since graduating my collection has continued to grow as you can see here.

In Defense of BADBADNOTGOOD, Part II

badbadnotgood
This post is mainly in response to the article Alex Rodriguez wrote last month at his blog which can be found here. This post will make more sense after reading his thoughts on BBNG.

The following was originally going to be a short little response to a comment left on my last post about BADBADNOTGOOD, but it turned into a bit of an essay so I figured I would post it here. The comment was left by one of the writers I cited in my last post:

Am I really an old fart at 27? You might be misreading this as a generation gap — I think it’s more that most people who actually enjoy jazz (of all ages) think that these guys are kinda lame.

It is a very long post, so I will let you continue reading it after the link!

Vinyl Throw

Between Diablo 3, Day Z, and getting back into MTGO recently, I have been a pretty busy guy. Due to these latest distractions, I haven’t been posting here as often as I should. I’m going to get back at it soon, here’s a little video to hold you over until I’m back!

Technical Difficulties (Fixed!)

technical difficulties

We’re back in business. The plugin that I was using has been updated to make the player work again somehow (still not sure how this is possible considering the new minimum embed requirements). No problems now though, have went back and fixed any posts that were having issues! Keeping the original post in the spoiler for reference in the future.
I noticed last night that the WordPress plugin that I was using to create audio players from Youtube hosted video has malfunctioned. Upon further investigation concerning the issue, it appears to be not a problem with the plugin but with the new standard of Youtube embeds instead. In the past it was possible to lower a video’s height to just the control function and the plugin that I was using made it look even nicer. Now it seems that this is no longer possible, thus forcing every Youtube embed to display video (If you look at the hundreds/thousands/etc of sites that might be using this, we are all having the same exact issue). So until either this standard changes back to normal or I find a good alternative, I have decided to remove a lot of these audio players from the site (those I have not replaced you may see some code instead).

I will continue to write and post normal videos as I have been doing a lot lately. It does mean that any future rambles that would normally feature the player will not be included for the time being unfortunately (I haven’t written an album ramble in awhile, but I do intend to work on some very soon!). Hopefully Youtube will give back this type of functionality soon as it is a very convenient way to share music in the articles that I write.

For my own reference (and anyone else curious) here is the problem I am having. The height is 25, which should only display the control panel. Instead it displays the video which is problematic as you can see here.

BADBADNOTGOOD

Writing about Stray Phrases last night reminded me of this group today. BADBADNOTGOOD is another jazz trio that takes inspiration from hip hop but puts their own touch on it (obviously a more jazzy take on the genre). Like the Stray Phrases’ cover of Donuts, these guys are known for doing a lot of remakes of classic hip hop beats. My favorite of course would be the video above which is a great collection of Metal Fingers beats, though their covers of Fall in Love, Electric Relaxation, and The World Is Yours are nice too. I haven’t had the chance to check out all of their material yet, but it is all available for free at their Bandcamp page.

While writing this post I have also run into some interesting discussion that seems to be taking place around the internet about these guys. From the NPR articles here and here it seems that the more traditional (and older) jazz community is worried I guess about the more recent hype that they have been receiving lately, particularly a result of their small tour and live sessions with popular artists like Tyler, the Creator (who I’m not much of a fan of, but I’ll get around to that whole subject at some other time…). I can’t say I’m incredibly knowledgeable about the current state of contemporary jazz or whatever label is put on it, but I do believe that the pretentious arguments being made by folks like this, this, and this aren’t really doing much to help the distinct generation gap between those listening to whichever artists these jazzsnobs consider appropriate and/or legitimate jazz and a younger crowd that can appreciate music for what it is, without all of these applied rules made up by those that supposedly know what this genre “really is”. I wouldn’t claim that BBNG is doing anything revolutionary or noteworthy in particular concerning the genre of jazz but I have yet to see any reason why there is such a controversy surrounding their acceptance as musicians within the jazz community. Just my thoughts on the matter anyway.

Stray Phrases – Donuts Tribute (Bonus Rappers Over Donuts Rant Included!)

Donuts

[soundcloud url=”http://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/10197503″ params=”auto_play=false&show_artwork=false&color=848484″ width=”100%” height=’85’ iframe=”true” /]

This was originally a post that was meant to share this wonderful Donuts tribute by Stray Phrases but it ended up turning into a bit of a rant. I’ve spent too much time writing it now, so I’d feel bad deleting all of it. I’ll just hide it in the spoiler! I stand by the point I’m trying to make anyway, if you’d like to skip it feel free to. –

This is an old tribute but I thought I would share it here after talking to my brother about Donuts earlier. We were talking about all of the rappers who have done their tributes and songs over beats from Donuts. A lot of this is from more underground/unknown folks who I argue are just trying to ride that Dilla train to popularity, but there are also more respected folks like Q-Tip, Talib Kweli, DOOM, and others who have done this as well. While I’m not trying to say that these raps can’t be good over Donut beats (a lot of them are great!), I still personally feel like it is sacrilege in a sense. Considering the circumstances that existed during the recording of this album, I feel it is just far too personal of a record to rap over. I have seen so many videos on Youtube with folks carelessly rapping over a Donut beat and throwing a “RIP DILLA” at the end of it and calling it a day. While sometimes the intention may be genuine, I can’t help but to be offended to a certain degree after seeing this happen. There are so many beats that someone can rap over, even those of J Dilla’s that I wouldn’t have this problem with. For myself personally though, Donuts is an incredible experience that should not be clouded by any kind of distractions. To this day I still get goosebumps after listening to Donuts (Intro) and realizing that he was recording this on his deathbed, knowing he would soon pass on. Thinking about someone rapping over a beat with this kind of history attached to it makes me sad, especially if the emcee knows the story behind the original beat…

Enough of this rant though (sorry!), here is what I consider a proper treatment of Donuts. During last year’s Dilla month the jazz trio Stray Phrases played a set for some small NYC bar that consisted of a cover of Donuts in its entirety. From start to finish they nailed every single aspect of this album in their own way. There were no raps, no singing, no gimmicks. Just the pure music that J Dilla created in jazz form. It’s amazing to me that a hip hop producer’s work can be integrated so well with traditional music, another fantastic representation of this seen in Carlos NiƱo & Miguel Atwood Ferguson’s Suite for Ma Dukes. Maybe I shouldn’t be so surprised though, seeing as how unique and talented Dilla was as a producer. He was truly one of a kind.

My only complaint with this performance was the obnoxious crowd. I’m curious as to whether anybody there realized what they were hearing. It’s a shame that there is no studio recorded version of the performance available, I would certainly purchase it if this were to ever happen. Sorry that this was a bit of a read, if you made it this far though here is a special surprise for you!

RIP MCA

After many years of fighting cancer, MCA has passed away today. Very sad news, it’s still hard to believe he is really gone now. If it wasn’t for the cancer, I swear the Beastie Boys would still be rocking it till they are old grandpas! I had been under the impression that his cancer treatment was going well and that he was getting better over the years but I guess that wasn’t the case. While all three of the Beastie Boys are amazing, MCA was especially awesome to me. The video above is my favorite representation of his skills on the mic. Every time I listen to B-Boy Bouillabaisse, I must turn the volume up to the max while this part is playing.

The Beastie Boys have been a huge part of my music life, so his passing is especially sad to me. I think I will be listening to a lot of their work these next couple of days to celebrate the fantastic music they have given us over the decades.

RIP Adam Yauch, you will be missed…
