First video from DOOM and Jneiro Jarel’s collaboration on the album Key to the Kuffs which dropped a few days ago. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen DOOM show up in a music video and I have to say this has to go down as one of my all time favorites. The camera work is fantastic, I feel like it is a bit of a throwback to the video for Dead Bent which is sweet. The JJ DOOM project is sounding pretty good from what I’ve heard so far, though JJ’s production is a bit funky with DOOM’s flow which is tough to get used to. Guv’nor is one of the better tracks I’ve heard from the album, happy to see a video made for it. Don’t think it tops Vodka & Ayahuasca’s video, but it certainly is close to being my favorite music video of the year so far. There have been so many good ones this year, folks are getting creative which is always nice!
Dr. No’s Infected Gadget Mix
[mixcloud https://www.mixcloud.com/waxramble_radio/drnos-infected-gadget-mix/ width=100% height=208 light=1 hide_cover=1 hide_tracklist=1]
Was listening to some random mixes last night and ran into this one. Dr. No’s Infected Gadget mix is a beat tape with Oh No flipping a bunch of Inspector Gadget samples. Oh No has made some heavy beats, but I think I can safely say these are some of the heaviest. I’m a huge fan of Oh No’s projects where he decides to focus on a single sample source/idea and completely destroy it (I think there are more of these than normally produced albums from Oh actually). It is cool when producers use a variety of sample types for their albums, but it takes someone very talented in my opinion to use related source material for beats that make up an entire album/mixtape. Oh No always brings the heat when it comes to these projects.
The mix is actually a couple of years old. A number of hip hop artists made some mixes and beat tapes that were sponsored by VTech (kind of a strange sponsor) and this was one of them. There were some really great mixes put together for this sponsorship but for some reason they were all taken down from the website that hosted them. You can still find a download link here and there for some of these, but I imagine most of the mixes will be forgotten which is a shame. The beats on this Gadget mix are way too good to be abandoned which is why I’ve decided to upload it for folks who are interested. If you are digging it you can go ahead and download it as well! I might get around to uploading some more of the other VTech mixes, lots of good music to be had from them.
JR & PH7 – Until It’s All Said And Done
Some new music from JR & PH7, this is the first single off their third album that is dropping soon. These have to be the coolest dudes in the game over in Germany, I’ve been a big fan of their work since The Standard which was one of my favorite albums the year it came out. Very happy to see they are still making new music. I’ll have to write more about these guys, will maybe get around to writing something up for The Standard one of these nights.
Action Bronson – Imported Goods & Diana Ross – Brown Baby
Was listening to the AEIOU mix that I posted about a few days ago this afternoon and was really digging the Diana Ross tune that makes an appearance about half way through. Diana Ross is always great, but the music behind her in Brown Baby is amazing. The very beginning is also something that would be perfect for a flip, I figured there was no way that this was slept on. My guess was right after a quick search over at Who Sampled.
There are some good candidates there on the list that I could have shared, but I ultimately decided on Imported Goods. I’ve actually heard this one before either on Turntable.fm or Plug.dj, which is why I guess the Diana Ross tune sounded familiar to me. I haven’t been following Action Bronson as much as I probably should be, but I have enjoyed everything I have heard of his so far. Not sure who did the production on this one, but they nailed the flip of Brown Baby. It is how I imagined a beat using the beginning section would turn out, it is perfect. I’ll have to listen to some more Bronson stuff though, I’m afraid I’ve been sleeping on his music a bit.
Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai
I wrote about Le Samurai last night and wanted to post a little bit about this movie too. As I mentioned in the previous post, Ghost Dog was essentially a remake of Le Samurai but was told in a way that was relevant to the time that it was filmed. Francois de Roubaix’s score for Le Samurai played a big role in setting the tone for the original movie and this idea was carried over perfectly with the decision to have RZA work on the music for this film.
Both films tell the story of a man following the way of a samurai in a modern setting, with the score of each movie really setting the mood for how we are to experience this as we watch. While Le Samurai’s soundtrack featured an excellent selection of jazz numbers that fit the more noir type setting perfectly, RZA’s work on Ghost Dog really helped the film have a darker atmosphere and display a more gritty or harsh reality than that of the original movie. As I mentioned last night, both movies are good in their own ways and I feel the same way about the soundtracks as well. Francois de Roubaix and RZA really deliver what I would consider perfect film scores that really reflect on the mood and theme being presented in each one.
Above is a great scene from the movie. In a nod to Wu Tang, Ghost Dog and a character played by RZA greet each other with the following: Power Equality Always C Everything or P.E.A.C.E. This part probably goes over a lot of people’s heads, but I imagine a lot of Wu fans got it!
Below is one of the main songs from the film, really fits the theme of the movie well.

Le Samourai Soundtrack
Was listening to this soundtrack the other night on iTunes and I figured I would share it over here. Le Samourai is an excellent French flick from the late 60s that I would highly recommend checking out (you can read about the film over here). I found out about this one after watching Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai which stars the always awesome Forest Whitaker and features some great music from RZA. Ghost Dog was basically a late 90s reinterpretation of Le Samourai. Kind of hard to say which one is better as they are both good movies in their own ways.
For some reason the soundtrack for Le Samourai is incredibly hard to find. It never got a release on wax (as far as I’m aware!) and the only CD with the music available is one that is always out of stock and could only be imported as seen here on Amazon. About three years ago I found the soundtrack through some “other” method and was able to share it with the world. The video above is a sampler I made back then on my super old Youtube channel, it is one of the more popular videos on that account with over 40k views as of writing this post. I’m actually proud of this since my video is Google’s first result if you search for “Le Samourai Soundtrack”. I imagine most folks coming to this page will be looking for the full thing… I’m happy to say you can still download the entire soundtrack right here!
Francois de Roubaix was the one responsible for the fantastic score of the film. If you read the Wikipedia page it is kind of sad to find out that he died in a diving accident in the mid 70s. I haven’t watched any of the other films that he had made music for, but that is definitely something I need to remember to do!
Check out the trailer for the film in the spoiler! –

Mixtape Download
I wrote about the awesome book project coming from Dust & Grooves the other week and I’m happy to say they exceeded their goal by almost $12,000! Really looking forward to seeing what comes out of the trip they’ll be taking. I imagine there will be a lot of interesting collections and folks along the way.
Above is a little promo vid that was done for the excellent AEIOU mixtape that was put together by TripleDouble, Duey Fm, and Master Sinh for the project’s Kickstarter campaign. There are some great selections on this one. Check it out for yourself with a free download over here.
We’re Back!
Finally have normal access to the internet again! I’ve been moving into a new place this last week so it was hard to write some posts up over here. Everything is back to normal now, brand new stuff will start showing up again soon. Tomorrow I’ll show off the new collection shelf, really like it over my old Walmart crates!
Dust & Grooves
[kickstarter url=http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/dustandgrooves/a-photography-book-about-vinyl-collectors-dust-and width=580]
Very cool project over on Kickstarter. I’ve checked out Dust & Grooves a few times in the past but I hadn’t been keeping up with the site lately. Fortunately I managed to catch this in time as there are only five more days left to support the project. They already have enough money to get to work on the book which is great, but more money can’t hurt!
Check out the video above to find out more about their plan to travel around the country to visit and photograph some interesting collectors. I really like the idea of documenting the vinyl collecting culture like this as the stories about the collectors/collections are often times even more interesting than the individual albums that are being shared. I have seen some good documentaries that cover this subject, but have yet to see a book cover this as well as what is being planned by the folks over at Dust & Grooves. I’m looking forward to grabbing the book when it is completed, should be a great read!
Homeboy Sandman – Rated Ours

Just found this track last night, very happy to see it finally released! The song appeared in the background of an interview with Sandman last year and it sounded really nice. It wasn’t on either of his latest EPs so I figured it’d be on the full album that was supposed to drop this year. Well First Of A Living Breed was announced just the other day and while the snippets included here sound fantastic, it was disappointing to see that Rated Ours didn’t make it. A quick Google search solved that problem though, found out it was dropped on a free mixtape last month over here.
VERY smooth production by KO Beatz and Sandman is great on the mic as usual. This has to be my favorite song from him that I have heard so far, might change when Living Breed comes out next month though.
