Over on Twitter I was reminded about these two mixes the other day. They were released about a year or two ago and were probably my favorite downloads around that time. There was so much new material, lots of great beats and guest spots with MED who as I’ve said before is one of my favorite emcees over at ST (and I’d honestly say one of my favorite rappers really). These could have been full blown albums as far as I’m concerned and there actually was a physical release for BYH 3 which was pretty sweet. There was also an awesome video made for Superman (with that insane J Rocc beat!) which you can watch below. Hopefully we will get some more of these Bang Ya Head mixes someday, can never get enough of this stuff!

Here’s an awesome video from Steve Smith that I shared over at my own site earlier this year. Datamoshing can be pretty sweet if done correctly and I’d definitely say that it’s nice here. The various selections from Flying Lotus’ Cosmogramma go great with it and I’d say that the video fits Flylo’s own video style pretty well.

Steve also did one of my favorite Stones Throw video contest entries last year which you can see below and has more recently worked on a video with Homeboy Sandman which you can check out here. Really neat stuff.

@waxramble on Twitter!

29zazm

So today I have finally decided to join Twitter (partly due to increasing peer pressure from @peachextract!). While I have yet to make a personal account of my own, I feel like a Twitter account for Wax Ramble is appropriate. It’s pretty cool to be able to connect with the artists that you enjoy and it’s also useful as a tool for shamelessly promoting my own stuff here as well I figure.

I have updated the site to include both Twitter and Facebook share buttons now. There’s also some new sidebar stuff so you can check out tweets and follow me over there if you’d like! I’ve had some ideas about how I will go about incorporating my Twitter activity with Wax Ramble, I will be working on some of that here pretty soon. After today I think I might get hooked to Twitter, so be sure to follow me over there for updates about this site and smaller things that might not pop up here.

Breaking Bad!

AMC just announced that Breaking Bad Season 5 will begin July 15th. Very excited, can’t wait to see how the series will progress after the amazing 4th season (Which for me was one of the best seasons of television ever produced!). To celebrate, above is a remix of the Breaking Bad intro theme by The Hood Internet with the best GIF ever! Both can be found over at Breaking Gifs. Also check out the awesome poster AMC has made to promote the new season in the spoiler. breaking bad season 5 poster

RIP Eduard Khil

Very sad news today. RT is reporting that Eduard Khil, the man famous for the very popular “Trololo” song above has passed away this morning from a recent stroke. Unlike many of the various Youtube memes that have been popular over the years, I have always felt like “Mr. Trololo” was actually a talented singer and that the very catchy tune was legitimately enjoyed by the millions who have listened to it. He was always a great sport about it too, encouraging the internet world to participate in the creation of a new track even (and finding humor in all of the tributes and parodies!). His story is a very interesting one and I’d suggest checking it out if you too were one of the millions that got some happiness from this video. Rest in peace Eduard, thank you for the wonderful music!

Wax Ramble Live! & Youtube Channel

2zfn2w3

The other night I was thinking about getting an internet stream working from my physical turntable so that I could share some records with friends and whatnot. After spending a little time figuring out how to get my broadcasting software to recognize my line in from the turntable, it seems to have turned out pretty well. I’m not sure how often I will be using this, but it might be useful if/when Plug.dj decides to integrate some live streams to the site. Years ago I did a music stream that got a little popular on Justin.tv, but it appears that the music streaming there these days isn’t as active. This makes sense considering excellent sites like Plug.dj, Turntable.fm, Pandora, Spotify, etc etc etc are all great sources of music streaming now (Music streams on Justin.tv were the pioneers of this new age of social music sharing sites I like to think!)

Something that will see far more use is the official Wax Ramble Youtube channel. I have uploaded a lot of songs that are marked as private which can only be heard here on the site (these are usually the songs you will see as audio players) but I have been uploading more public content lately as well. It is hard to post music on Youtube these days without getting your account shut down and stupid things like that, so the public content will tend to be more original/unique stuff that is safe from all the legality crap.

So there you have it! To check out either of these pages, simply click on the corresponding banner that is displayed in the right sidebar of every page.

Pete Rock’s Vinyl Collection

Interesting video from Fuse with Pete Rock and his huge record collection. It’s cool to hear him talk about some of the stuff he has on wax and how much the music means to him personally. The idea of him finding the sample to TROY by simply checking out the cover and deciding to play it is funny to me, what a fortunate find if that’s true! He notes the song as “career defining” and if I am understanding what he’s saying correctly I think that’s pretty incredible. Someday I hope to travel the world and dig like he describes in the video too, it would be sweet to check out all the little shops and find those treasures that he talks about. Check out the vid, some nice insight into Pete the record collector.

Nas x Will Sessions

As I mentioned the other day, I’ve been listening to a bunch of Elmatic lately. Last night I was thinking about what Nas would sound like over the recreated beats by Will Sessions and to my surprise nobody has taken this idea and put something on Youtube yet. I was very bored so I figured I would go ahead and give it a shot. It was a bit disappointing to find out that many of the songs from Illmatic do not have acapellas and some of the ones that are available are not complete. This might be why nobody has bothered combining the two, but I tried my best to give an idea of what it would sound like. I think I matched them decently, with the exception of The World is Yours which was more difficult because of how much was missing from that acapella. From what I was able to do with the video though, I think the idea of Nas and Will Sessions getting together to do a live version of Illmatic would be pretty sweet.

Update: Re-uploaded this, the original video’s version of The World is Yours was just a little too off to me. I think the updated video above sounds a bit better, but still a little tough pairing that one due to the acapella that is available.

Elzhi – It Ain’t Hard To Tell

I’ve been listening to a lot of Elmatic lately, it really is a fantastic tribute to a classic. The recreated beats by Will Sessions are amazing, the live instrumentation really gives the music some new life. Elzhi’s reinterpretation of Illmatic is very tasteful/respectful and carries over the same kind of vibes that are present in Nas’ album as well. There was a lot that could have gone wrong with this concept, but in the end the amazing talent shared between Elzhi and Will Sessions was more than enough to ensure that this album may be considered a classic in its own right.

Quakers – Fitta Happier

MED, Guilty Simpson, and a sweet marching band cover of Radiohead’s The National Anthem (not this song as the title suggests!). Fantastic! Really digging this tune, still need to pick up the full album sometime soon. Guilty and MED are my two favorite Stones Throw emcees, always happy to see them on stuff and even more happy when they are performing together! MED has had some releases lately but I haven’t seen much coming from Guilty these days which is a shame. Hopefully there will be more of his stuff later in the year.
