Homeboy Sandman

I hadn’t heard of Homeboy Sandman before his recent signing to Stones Throw, but I can certainly see why Peanut Butter Wolf would have been interested in having him on the label. Over the last week or so I have been listening to a lot of his past work and it’s pretty refreshing to see that emcees like him exist outside of where I would normally look for this type of music (Stones Throw and affiliated folks). I am very happy to see that he’s now working with ST, can’t wait to see if he does end up collaborating with some of the other artists on the label when his full album comes out later this year. He recently debuted with Subject: Matter, which is a 6 song EP release that I plan on grabbing very soon. Haven’t been able to listen to the full thing yet, but it is sounding excellent from the samples on the store page. I’m looking forward to listening to more Homeboy Sandman this year, will definitely be writing about his work as I continue to check it out.

Above is my favorite music video of his that I have seen so far, with some more videos and music included below.

Cool video, probably my favorite Sandman song that I have heard so far (really digging the production).

Props to Avant-Garde on this one, had forgotten about this video until he posted it on my Facebook the other day.

Not a music video, but this is great.

This is actually where I first found out about him signing to Stones Throw, think I might have originally seen it on STMB. Really digging the song that is playing on the video, hope that it gets released sometime (figured it would be on Subject: Matter, but not on there unfortunately. Maybe on the full album that is coming?).

Gangrene – Vodka & Ayahuasca (Video)

Still going to wait for my copy to show up before writing about it, but here is the awesome video that was done for their first single. Jason Goldwatch is a pretty creative dude, he also helped to make the album teaser videos which can be found on their “Livers for Sale” site.

Gangrene – Gutter Water

TRACK – TRACK

One of my favorite projects that I have been following for the past year or two would have to be the collaboration between Oh No and the Alchemist who make up Gangrene. Both are fantastic producers and I don’t think anyone could have imagined how great combining the two could be for an entire album. I have heard some compare this to Jaylib (Madlib and J Dilla) and while my opinion might not be very popular, I would confidently say that the project between Oh and Alc has produced better work. To be fair though, I think a lot of this has to do with the way that the two projects went about making music. Champion Sound mainly consisted of Madlib and Dilla sending each other their own beats so that the other could rap over it, while the collaboration of the Gangrene project has been far more involved (Both producers working on the project with the intention of creating an album and having them both rapping in the same songs). So while Jaylib might have been one of the first notable times two producers have come together to make an album like this, I feel like Gangrene has shown how well the formula can work if both artists work together a lot more closely.

Jay Dee – Fuck the Police & Rene Costy – Scrabble

TRACK – TRACK

Today is the first day of Dilla Month, so I’m going to talk about one of my favorite Jay Dee records that I own. While I am a big fan of Welcome 2 Detroit, Donuts, Ruff Draft, and the rest of his work, his original 12″ Fuck the Police is probably my favorite thing he ever put out. Not only is the beat incredible, but I feel like of all the “fuck the police” songs that have been made, Dilla gives some of the best examples of why the police can suck ass.

Madlib – Shades of Blue

TRACK – TRACK

For the first record I write about, I thought it would make sense to do the first album that I ever got on wax. I started collecting vinyl about 3 years ago after buying Madlib’s Shades of Blue. I had been getting into Madlib’s work for a few years before this and at the time Shades of Blue was probably my favorite instrumental album. I remember thinking about collecting records for a while at this time, especially since Stones Throw as a label was always very friendly to those still rocking wax (with almost every album getting released and the limited/special edition type stuff that is vinyl only). I ended up looking at eBay for Madlib stuff and noticed a cheap brand new copy of this album. I think I paid around $11 shipped, which is actually quite cheap for a brand new record shipped to me. Ever since that day I have continued to grab some of my favorite albums and new releases on wax.

Pixies – In Heaven (Live)

I probably should have started this blog off with an entry discussing an album (A Wax Ramble), but I’m still thinking about how I would like to go about doing those. So in the meantime, here is an awesome live version of the Pixies covering In Heaven. Was listening to the Pixies Complete B-Sides the other day and if I’m not mistaken it is the same recording from above. Love the way the band kicks in halfway and the abrupt end to the song. What an awesome way to end a concert.

I will definitely be writing more about the Pixies in the future as they are without a doubt my favorite band of all time.

Welcome!

Hello and welcome to my blog. I created this site so that I have a space to write and post things about the music that I enjoy from day to day. The site is named Wax Ramble as I plan to write a bit about the many records that I have collected and continue to grab every so often. I’m not a musician, a critic, or anything like that. I’m just a dude who likes to listen to music everyday. My goal is for this place to be a little spot where I can share my thoughts about what I am listening to.

So with that said, thank you for visiting my site! If you have any questions or comments, feel free to post on any entry or send me an email at waxramble AT gmail.com.
