Haven’t listened to this album in a long time, forgot I had it until I was checking out my crates last night. It’s a great compilation of some fantastic/rare Brazilian 7″ records that lean more towards the psych/funk/rock side of things. Above is a trailer for the album that was made up of video from the documentary which was included with the CD version. I went ahead and bought it on wax shortly after seeing it, so I never did end up watching the film until today after looking for it online. The original video is about 15 minutes long and can be viewed after the jump. Looks like everyone is getting together to make a full length movie based on the project, which was funded on Kickstarter late last year. Wish I had known about it then, I would have definitely supported it as well. I’m looking forward to the full length movie coming out, as the short version below is really entertaining (Joel Stones is a cool dude). Continue reading
Record Collection
Finally got around to doing some inventory of my small record collection. I’m really OCD about the stuff I own, so keeping track of these types of things is pretty common for me to do as you can see here and here for example. My collection is relatively small right now but it should continue to grow over time, especially now that I have this website to inspire me to check out more stuff on wax. If you are interested, feel free to look at the new Collection page for a full list of what I have. I’m going to be updating this very frequently, so it should be up to date when I start getting some new stuff in.
Oddisee – Drugs Outside Remix
Found this in my Turntable queue tonight, fantastic remix. Wish I could remember who I stole it from, props to them for sure though!
Giorgio Moroder Promo
I’ve been listening to a lot of Giorgio Moroder the past few nights so I thought I would share this video. Ran into this one while watching a bunch of Kraftwerk stuff on Youtube, thought it was pretty cool to see a little bit of his recording process in the studio. The vocoder work on the album he’s talking about (E=MC2) is awesome, especially on the song that he’s playing in the video.
I hadn’t really checked out his stuff until after looking into what sample was used for the middle portion of DOOM’s Gazillion Ear (which is also known as Phantom of the Synths). The Moroder sample from Midnight Express that was used in the song is fantastic, I’m a fan of a lot of the more electronic stuff Dilla was sampling. The interesting bit to me was that I hadn’t found out about Moroder from the more obvious sampling of E=MC2, which Dilla used for his song on The Shining of the same name. This seems to be where a lot of J Dilla fans have first heard about Moroder anyway.
After all of these years of listening to Coast to Coast AM, I also finally know where the theme song comes from!
James Pants @ Boiler Room
[vimeo 29570753 w=580 h=326]
One of my favorite artists over at Stones Throw giving one hell of a performance for the Boiler Room. I don’t think I have ever seen such a crazy DJ set before. He’s spinning some amazing tunes while at certain points grabbing the mic to sing and even messing around with the electric drum set all at the same time. Very exciting performance, I hope I get the chance to see him live some day.

Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth – They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)
As the top comment on Youtube currently says, “It’s like a Stairway to Heaven of hip-hop”. Couldn’t have said it better myself, one of the best hip hop songs ever made.
Talib Kweli – Distractions
Figure this is a good follow up to yesterday’s post. Really digging this song, the production by Oh No is especially great. Very happy to see Mos/Talib take more production from Madlib/Oh No. Mos had 4 songs produced from their material on The Ecstatic back in 09 and both of the new Blackstar songs that came out contain a beat from each of them. Looking forward to all of these albums coming to fruition, should be a great year for hip hop!
Yasiin Bey – Niggas In Poorest
Fantastic video for Bey’s “Niggas in Poorest” that was released a few days ago. While I don’t think it’s necessarily a diss song on Kanye & Jay-Z’s version as some folks are seeing it, I definitely think it’s a strong hint to people about the direction that he wishes to see hip hop move towards. While Kanye and Jay-Z are babbling about a bunch of nonsense in “Paris” for their usual pop song, Bey is hitting some real points that the listener may relate to and think about seriously. Not a surprise though, Mos has been doing this for many years now. It’s nice to see folks like him (and Talib!) receive more exposure lately, 2012 is looking like a good year for this kind of music.
Martha Reeves & the Vandellas – Take A Look
A favorite of mine from the excellent Madlib Motown Mix.
Sweet Home Chicago ft President Obama
Whether or not you agree with his politics, you have to admit Obama is one of the coolest presidents we have ever had. He can shoot 3 pointers with ease, sing some Al Green, and even help fire a marshmallow gun. Now we have some video of him singing part of Sweet Home Chicago, which is especially awesome since the Blues Brothers is probably my favorite movie of all time. From the looks of it, we will be getting 4 more years of awesome Obama clips.
