Gangrene – Odditorium EP

Brand new Gangrene out today. Vodka and Ayahuasca is still my favorite album so far this year (I’ve been very busy, but will get around to writing about it here soon!) and it’s good to see Oh and Alc continuing to release material together. The new EP is available as a 12″ picture disc and a free download from Redbull here. Check out the video above too, Goldwatch kills it as usual.

5 Reasons Why Turntable.fm Users Should Check Out Plug.dj

zmhy55

Over the last month or so I have been spending a lot of time over on Plug.dj as I’ve mentioned in a few of my latest posts. My experience over the last month or so has felt similar to the time when I first joined Turntable.fm last year, when I would spend countless hours in the various rooms sharing music and talking to other folks. Over time though I moved away from Turntable, something I don’t imagine will happen as quickly with Plug. This is because while Turntable has remained the same with very little innovation over the last year, Plug offers so much more to its users. While the radical new look/layout might feel strange at first (this was originally a problem for me, but I quickly got used to it), I feel that the majority of Turntable users will be able to appreciate the improved experience that is found within this site.

Below are just some of the reasons why you should take a look at Plug.dj.

Video: While Turntable is great for sharing audio, being able to share video on Plug is even better. This aspect of Plug brings about even more uses to the site other than just listening to music, which can lead to some interesting results. Some rooms I have seen have included movies, random internet videos, stand up comedians, and more. Not being limited to just audio is one of main reasons I have almost completely switched over to Plug these days.

Playlists: I’m a fan of many different genres of music, which can sometimes become a problem with Turntable. Being limited to a single playlist can be frustrating when you move over to different rooms, especially if you are dealing with a large amount of songs. Plug fixes this by offering the ability to make up different playlists. Now I can have specific lists that contain music for the different types of rooms I want to join.

International users welcome: Unlike Turntable, Plug is open to the international community. This allows for more diversity not only in the user base, but also with the content that is being shared. I have heard a lot of music that I probably wouldn’t have ever looked into before and have talked to some great people from all over the world thanks to Plug.

Control over rooms: Plug offers a lot of control to those who wish to start a room. In the latest update to the site, there are now wait lists, max plays, booth locking, and even more features. Some of these things can be utilized on Turntable, but a lot of it is through the use of unofficial modifications, bots, etc. It’s nice that Plug builds these features into the site which makes it very convenient to get the room working exactly how you would like with minimal work required. Expect even more features to be included in the future as the site continues to grow (You can even e-mail ideas@plug.dj to make suggestions!).

Live events and guests: Because Plug can display video, it is also possible for rooms to stream events as they are happening. There have been some live concerts and events on the site so far, but it is something I imagine growing even more as people find out about Plug and realize all of the potential this aspect has. Plug has also had many fantastic guest rooms where a musician or web personality has been able to share their favorite videos and interact with their audience on a personal level. I can see this taking off in the future too as the site becomes even more popular.

As you can see, Plug is doing a lot of things right. While Turntable.fm is certainly great, there is definitely room for websites like Plug.dj as well. While it wasn’t the first site to enter this relatively new space of social music, they are working very hard to innovate in places where the competition simply hasn’t focused on yet. As the young site continues to grow, I imagine Plug will eventually become one of the more popular destinations for those wishing to share music and video with others.

David Liebe Hart Band

As I’ve mentioned before, I’m a huge Tim & Eric fan. David Liebe Hart, a frequent guest on the show was easily one of my favorite parts about Awesome Show (I even own a painting I bought from him a few years ago). Since the conclusion of the program, DLH has continued working on his music. I remember listening to his stuff with Adam Papagan back in high school. These days he’s with a band playing punk music. I wasn’t quite sure how this would sound until hearing the recorded sessions included in this post. I must say that it is fantastic, the band he’s performing with is great. Right now he has a Kickstarter going on to help fund a recorded album, I’m really hoping he will reach his goal so we can get some more of this stuff (I put my $20 in!). Be sure to check out Violitionist for DLH’s thoughts about his time at SXSW 2012, Korendians, and the future of his music career.

I need to go cop Chimera! Love the promo songs Sandman does for his releases (he’s also done one for Subject Matter). Especially looking forward to this one, excited to see him working with producers like Paul White and Exile. Will be getting this one very soon.

Figure

Decided to buy some music apps for my iPad today and I grabbed Figure along with Synth and Addictive Synth. While all of these are great, Figure is especially entertaining to mess around with. I wouldn’t consider it “creating” music, but more of “constructing” it out of the app. It’s kind of like building a Lego set if the bricks were sound I guess. I’d highly recommend grabbing it since it’s only 99 cents. While it doesn’t have an iPad version, the normal iPhone/iPod app scales very well on the bigger screen unlike other apps.

Avant-Garde – All She Wrote

All She Wrote is the third release from one of my good Turntable.fm buddies Avant-Garde. He dropped this a week ago and I have been listening to it a lot since then. Just getting around to making this post now, I’ve been pretty busy with a lot of things lately. Of all the artists I’ve seen playing their own stuff over on Turntable, I’d have to say that Trevor’s work is by far some of the most solid and best sounding music I have heard. If he doesn’t make it big someday, I’m going to lose just a little more hope with the hip hop audience. Don’t sleep on this dude’s music for sure, I have a feeling you’ll be hearing about his work a lot in the future.

If you are digging the tunes above, grab the whole EP for free over here. Also be sure to check out his earlier EP releases over here. Finally, like him over on Facebook and check his blog Endless Euphony for some great posts!

Molotov – Amateur

Here’s another awesome video from Plug.dj (props to my buddy Christian!). Will start writing some more stuff here pretty soon, I know I’ve been slacking off the last couple of weeks…

Bastion

Finished Bastion tonight and I must say that it’s easily the best game I have played this year so far. If I had played it last year when it was released, it would have been very high on my game of the year list for sure. The gameplay, graphics/artwork, and narration are amazing. Not only that, but the soundtrack is absolutely fantastic. It compliments the game so well, with it playing a big role in setting the mood for many parts of the story. Bastion is truly an experience you shouldn’t miss out on, I would highly recommend buying it if you are even remotely interested in video games.

Com Truise – Brokendate

I’ve been hanging out over at Plug.dj a lot lately which is why I haven’t posted anything here the last few days. I’ll be writing something about the site in a few days but in the meantime here is an excellent video someone played in a room tonight. REALLY digging the tune, had to look it up so I could check out some more of this stuff. As a note to myself, it is by Com Truise and can be found on the album Galactic Melt. Will have to grab this sometime for sure.

Souls of Mischief – Step to my Girl

I’ve been checking out videos I have on my favorites list from my old Youtube account and I’m finding all sorts of great music that I have forgotten about. This is a nice one I haven’t heard in quite some time, believe it is yet another song that I first heard on Turntable.fm. I don’t recall who played it the first time, but after they did I swear there were about 4-5 people who grabbed it to play for others (myself included!).
