It’s been many years in the making but we will finally get Oh No’s Ohnomite at the end of the month. Have been very excited about the idea of this album for a long time now, happy to know it will see the light of day. Based on the information that is currently available at Stones Throw, it’s sounding like one hell of a record (Check that features list!). Especially love the artwork for the cover, it’d be awesome if ST made a poster available.

For those not familiar with the concept of the album, Oh No is releasing an entire record based on the samples of Rudy Ray Moore’s Dolemite. Before his passing in 2008, it’s said that he gave Oh No access to a lot of his archives and gave the ok on the project. Can’t wait to hear the results, considering it’s Oh No I imagine it will be excellent.

Vividblaze – Tight Rope (Floor Mix)

More Japanese music! This is a video from a few years ago, enjoyed it a lot back then. Don’t exactly remember where I saw it from originally, I started listening to a little bit of Vividblaze after seeing it though. The music is great and the fact that everything in the video is a very detailed miniature model is neat.

YMCK / Gin & Tonic & Red Red Roses

Last post reminded me of this. One of my favorite songs from any of the Katamari games (and there’s a lot of good music throughout the series!). I kept playing this stage over and over again in Katamari Forever just to hear the song, then finally downloaded the track to keep listening to. Really should listen to more stuff from YMCK, I’m still not very familiar with all of their work yet.

Goldfish – We Come Together

Awesome song and video! Lots of video games covered in the clip, can you spot them all?

Dana Harmon – Stormy

Yet another discovery from my old Youtube playlist. Fantastic guitar over Madlib’s Stormy (from Shades of Blue). Enjoy!

How It Should Sound

Found this on one of my older playlists, thought I would share it here. I’ve been a big fan of Damu ever since finding out about these records. The promo video is awesome, especially love the part where he’s playing the xylophone live. Still need to pick up a few more of his records, really enjoy all of the beats I have ever heard from him. I’d highly recommend checking out these albums too, both volumes were finally put together in one release which should help make it even easier to find now.

Yellow Magic Orchestra

More videos:

Yet another reason I love Plug.dj! I had never heard of these guys before, but after listening to some of their stuff tonight I’m hooked. Definitely going to check out more of their work this weekend when I have more time, this music is amazing. Props to Gozer over at Hover Beards for the hook up.

How City Hall is Fucking Record Store Day!

Very interesting video from Reason about Washington D.C.’s new policies that have the potential to shut down many of the local record shops around that area. People wonder why our economy sucks so much right now… watch the video above to see how hard the local D.C. government is working against these small businesses. If these new policies remain in effect, the government will force many of these people to close their doors forever. I wish all the shop owners in the affected area luck as they fight against these idiotic decisions being made by the city.

Record Store Day 2012

record store day 2012

Today is Record Store Day 2012! My original plan was to hit some shops in Seattle this afternoon, but I was very tired from my first week of work at my new job. I decided to stay a little more local because of this and took a drive over to Hi-Voltage Records in Tacoma. First time visiting their shop, it reminded me a little of Jive Time Records over in Fremont but with more new records. Like most of the shops in Washington I have visited, the hip hop sections were pretty slim unfortunately. They had a nice selection of rock, funk, and jazz for sure though.

I ended up grabbing a few records, would have gotten more if I wasn’t so broke right now. Was thinking about buying Pixies Doolittle, but decided to get the new Beastie Boys vinyl because it was the fancy white version with a bonus 7 inch inside. Before leaving I checked out the sidewalk selection and found a few goodies too. Found the Moody Blues album with Lost in a Lost World (a favorite song of mine Madlib has sampled/thrown into some mix). Also bought a Cheap Thrills album with some sweet Robert Crumb art. Wasn’t very familiar with the actual band until looking it up when I got home. Probably not a big fan of their music (and according to this video, Crumb isn’t really either) but it was definitely worth the $2 I paid for the artwork alone!

Was nice to finally get around to checking out a shop today, I haven’t been to a record store in quite some time. Hopefully next year I will have more money and time to check out some other shops around the Northwest.
