Cool track shared over on STMB. Very very rough version of an unreleased track with DOOM and another rapper “Adam 12”, produced by Stape Mega. Even in the raw state that this track is in, it’s sounding awesome to me. Below is an explanation of the rough cut from Stape Mega’s Bandcamp:

This a song that Dept. of Rec. did with MF Doom around 2001. This is a song that never was. It turned out to be a disaster because the studio where we recorded it had a problem with their digital recorder and the song was lost forever before it could be mixed properly. Salty, right? Hell fuckin’ yes! The plan was to go back and mix it properly and possibly even switch out the beat. Doom was so cool to chill with that day in the studio. Good memories.

Unreleased Lambo

Some unreleased Lambo tracks sent my way, awesome stuff. I imagine people know him more for his association to ESGN & Freddie Gibbs, but he has also put out some music/videos and artwork in the past. Even have a 7″ for Computer Bagel / My Red Volvo that was released years ago by Stones Throw under “Flux Capacitor Records”. Really diggin both tracks above, though I especially like the James Pants vibe of Future Burrito. You can download these tracks over here. Below is Lambo’s amazing video for the original version of Computer Bagel.

ps: Future Burrito Disclaimer:

This song is dedicated to those nights when it’s 10 pm and you just know you’ll end up eating a burrito before the sun rises again…A time machine of sorts…A vessel ahead….A Future Burrito….

Future Burrito by Lambo

I’m so hungry I could die
I want chicken, beans, and rice
You do something
Something to me
You’re all I want
Want to eat

The night’s moving slow
And I Need To know
Future Burrito, Future Burrito (2x)

I am so hungry for your love
So take me to the taco truck

I am so hungry for your touch
So take me to the taco truck

Future Burrito…….

Badass DJ set from Madlib last month, I believe his first appearance with Boiler Room. Lots of great music thrown into the mix, would have been awesome to see the performance live. Will hopefully be able to check out a Madlib set someday. Enjoy!

Pavement – Space Ghost Coast to Coast

My last post got Land of the Hot Knives stuck in my head. Pavement’s appearance as “The Beatles” on Space Ghost Coast to Coast is probably one of my favorite memories of old school Adult Swim. Both songs featured in this episode were fantastic.

After looking on Youtube for a video to post, I decided I would have to upload my own as the few available were in pretty horrible quality. Cartoon Network loves to be Nazis about old Adult Swim stuff so I wouldn’t be surprised if it gets pulled down sometime in the future. Hopefully this clip will fly under the radar for a bit anyway.

Been digging through some old stuff tonight and ran into these guys. Years before Adult Swim put up it’s Bump Builder, I was making some of my own as you can see above. I’ve always been a big fan of Adult Swim and enjoyed the bumps that the network is known for. I had ran into a website called BumpWorthy and noticed in the forums that people were making their own so I thought I would join in.

Two originals that were pretty influencing were the You Can Be Happy and Owls Only bumps, these are a few of my favorites featured back in the day. I think I had made about a half dozen or so of these but ended up deleting most of them from Youtube (the ones above were the best of these). Personally I think the first one with the owl was the best one I made. If you’re looking for the song credits check out each video!

Oddisee – Tangible Dream (Mixtape)

[bandcamp width=100% height=120 album=1781985734 size=large bgcol=ffffff linkcol=333333 tracklist=false artwork=small]

I posted the video for Own Appeal which is featured on this mixtape a few days ago, but I thought Tangible Dream deserves some more attention here. Originally only included with The Beauty In All , it is now available as a “name your price” download on Bandcamp. While Beauty In All is a nice release, I feel that Tangible Dream is a bit stronger. There are some fantastic messages represented in this mixtape that many folks in hip hop rarely touch on. The description of the project by Oddisee explains this quite well:

I live in a gentrified part of Brooklyn, I eat out several times a week, I travel the world sampling the best that cities across the globe have to offer. Do I live in a penthouse loft? Am I dinning in five stars restaurants? Can you only find me in the most exclusive areas? Do I own a jet? The answer to all the above is most certainly no. I’m just a regular man from Prince George’s county, Maryland that figured shit out.

I discovered that I can make a career in an arena dominated by artists that sell false dreams. I realized that although the masses may not know of my body of work, it doesn’t take the whole world to have the world I want. Tangible Dream is a mix-tape dedicated to the deconstruction of our traditional ideas of success & shedding light on the possibility of a sustainable rap life.

These rhymes were written in economy class seats, these beats were produced on long bus trips & these songs were recorded in airbnb apartments. All I want to do is make music for a living so that I can live to make music. The only dreams I’m interested in are the ones I can grasp. It just so happens that anything you want bad enough can be obtained. Perhaps the world may never know of my accomplishments but accomplishments they are nonetheless.

The track Tomorrow Today touches on some of this the best:

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=1781985734 size=small bgcol=ffffff linkcol=333333 track=1137083258]

Another standout track is Yeezus Was A Mortal Man:

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=1781985734 size=small bgcol=ffffff linkcol=333333 track=427280947]

It’s refreshing to see someone finally discussing how ridiculous the god comparison is in hip hop. Many rap fans act as if folks like Kanye, Jay-Z, etc are above others to the point of being godlike when in reality these guys are just like you and I. It’s especially annoying given that these fans are into this idea based on the self proclamations of these rappers and their marketing teams. I’m an atheist, but if there were any god or gods I would sure hope that the standard is higher. Especially appreciating the title given that Kanye represents so much of what is wrong with the music industry today in my opinion. It’s nice to see someone with far more talent taking Kanye down a peg.

Oddisee is incredibly underrated which is disappointing to me, though I suppose it’s true what he says above, “The world may never know of my accomplishments but accomplishments they are nonetheless”. Tangible Dream and every other project Oddisee has been involved in are worth checking out, definitely recommend these records! Download Tangible Dream here.

David Liebe Hart Band

david liebe hart punk

Received my vinyl copy of David Liebe Hart Band in the mail today! Was a supporter of the Kickstarter earlier this year and got my CD copy awhile back, I thought the album turned out great. Evil Weevil Records did a fantastic job with the vinyl pressing of this release, the artwork on the sleeve is very nice. As you can see in the photo above I decided on the white version (black and blue pressings are available as well). If you’re a fan of DLH I’d definitely recommend grabbing a copy on wax! If you’ve never heard of this project you should check out a previous post with some great live material from the band.

Oddisee – Own Appeal (Video)

New video from Oddisee featuring a great track off his mixtape “Tangible Dream” which is included with his recently released album The Beauty In All (check out that nice blue vinyl). I was a huge fan of Oddisee’s last album People Hear What They See that dropped last year, really dig it when Oddisee is on the mic. While most people appreciate his production skills, I feel like he definitely deserves some hype for his rap as well. Very intelligent thoughts shared through his lyrics, hip hop could always use more of this.

Own Appeal is available as a free download over here. Both The Beauty In All & People Hear What They See are worth checking out too!

Toro Y Moi – Grown Up Calls (Live)

Great live performance of Grown Up Calls, easily my favorite Toro Y Moi song. I’ve been listening to Anything in Return again the last couple nights which is still in my top three for album of the year. I’ve read a lot of things online from fans/reviews who were kind of upset that Chaz Bundick moved away from the more “chillwave” sound of Causers of This which I think is kind of a bummer. I’m a big fan of his move into pop, though maybe it is easier to accept this new direction given I had never heard of Toro Y Moi until this latest album. Going back through all his records, I still feel like this is the best material (though his previous albums are great as well). It’d be great to see Toro Y Moi live sometime, all of the performances I have seen have been fantastic including the one above.

Paper Route Gangstaz – Wood Grain

paper route gangstaz

TRACK

Fantastic track I originally heard during James Pant’s mix for FACT. The first time I heard this I was for the lack of a better term, “blown away”. Not sure what it is about the rappers and the production for this record, but the combination brings what would be a generic southern rap about money/cars to such a higher level. As JP points out on his old blog, the production on this track really did utilize the Poltergeist Theme to it’s fullest potential.

After looking around online a bit at other stuff Paper Route Gangstaz have done, I found that Mad Decent released a compilation of tracks/remixes from the associated label Paper Route Recordz and that Emynd remixed Wood Grain which can be heard below:

TRACK

Digging both versions, but I think it’s tough to top that original sample.
